It’s not often you wake up to a view of one the world’s eight wonders. But when you’re staying at Commune by the Great Wall, the location is just one part of the experience. Innovative, cutting edge and altogether different, Commune is a once in a lifetime destination.
The owners commissioned 12 of Asia’s most avant garde architects to each design a villa and the result is an architectural odyssey, from the suspended suitcase-like building by Hong Kong’s Gary Chang to the spiritual retreat conceived by Thailand’s Kanika R’kul. Sleek polished corridors, stone floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and designer furniture from the likes of Marc Newson and Karim Rashind complete the jaw-dropping effect. If it all sounds more like a design museum than hotel, you can always stay in one of the 31 Kempinsky-managed villas, which follow a pared down but more sensual aesthetic.
There are breathtaking views of the rugged mountainside from every angle and you even have private access to the mighty wall. Commune is one of China’s, of not the world’s most fabulous hotels.
