The Alila’s seaside resort in naturally spectacular East Bali could represent the epitome of “tropical getaway”. Built in a coconut grove between the sea and towering Mount Agung, all rooms face the ocean and offer clear views to Nusa Penida, while design could conveniently be described as a mélange of old and new Balinese, with a splash of Santorini’s stark white angles thrown in.
The 54 rooms and two corner suites are arranged in thatched Balinese-style pavilions inspired by the island’s village wantilan, or meeting hall, built around the palm-fringed pool. The nearby Seasalt restaurant features contemporary, Indonesian and Balinese fare, but the truly ambitious can learn to whip up East Balinese dishes themselves at the property’s cooking school, the first in Bali.
Of course, spa addicts need not go without: the Alila Spa performs a variety of massages, facials and body treatments incorporating ingredients like frankincense resin, coffee, and toffee body butter.
Alila Manggis is situated within the regency of Karangasem, close to the village of Candi Dasa, and provides the perfect base from which to explore unspoiled east Bali. This area of the island is renowned for its spectacular beauty, where the steep rise from coast to mountain creates magical scenery.
