Visitors to Bali looking for an experience beyond the usual fly-and-flop routine are in for a treat at Tugu Hotel, part of a string of properties owned by an enthusiastic Southeast Asian art and antiques collector. Here, the aim is to bring the “luxury and romance” of forgotten Javanese and Balinese history back to life.
Tugu Hotel’s 22 rooms and suites, some named after interesting figures in Balinese history, are generously decorated with almost 1,000 antiques or art pieces, and no two are alike. However, all boast sunken baths, oversized beds, private pools and spa areas.
Matters of the stomach are attended to by a handful of dining options, all claiming to be purveyors of “culinary art”. These outlets include the stunning Bale Sutra (or “Palace of Harmony”), set in a red 18th century temple, and the Waroeng Djawa kitchen, said to offer the best Javanese and Balinese fare on the island.
30 minutes from the airport, 15 minutes from Seminyak's new and hip nightlife and restaurant quarters, 10 minutes from the famously breathtaking Tanah Lot as well as a golf course that is known to be one of the best in South East Asia, stepping foot on Hotel Tugu Bali means leaving the modern days behind and entering a new dimension that is rather unearthly. It is a place where time stops, where only the most romantic tales happened once upon a time.
