For a bona fide slice of Malaysian history, look no further than Carcosa Seri Negara: not one, but two famous colonial buildings that once housed visiting dignitaries but which now welcome history-loving travelers with well-padded wallets.
The main building, Carcosa (derived from the Italian word for “dear place”), was once the residence of the highest British officials of the Malay state. On an adjacent hillside, the Seri Nagara (“beautiful country”) used to be called the “King’s House” and was where illustrious guests came to stay. Today, rooms are still furnished in the style of their heyday: four poster beds, luxurious bathrooms, and verandas, plus modern-day conveniences like DVD players.
The French cuisine-serving Dining Room conjures up images of “fin de siècle” style, with its plush carpeting and chandeliers; the more contemporary Gulai House serves Malay food. Naturally, afternoon is yours for the taking in the well-appointed Drawing Room, and the Bar offers a selection of cigars alongside aperitifs.
Located on top a hill overlooking the Lake Gardens, the Carcosa is just minutes away from central Kuala Lumpur. This boutique Malaysian heritage hotel features 13 Victorian-style suites that derive their names from Malaysian states. This carefully restored residence is set on four acres of lush gardens that was originally built in 1904.
