About the Hotel

People who want to go to the Maldives – 50 years ago, but with all of the luxuries and conveniences available today – should find the hotel equivalent of a soul mate in Cocoa Island (locally known as Makunufushi), a string of luxury cottages cleaving through the Indian Ocean off the less-developed South Kaafu Atoll.

Here, the pristine seascape is the ultimate star. Cottages play a riff on that theme with rooms inspired by Maldivian fishermen’s boats. Private terraces enable guests to sunbathe at their hearts’ content. As it’s part of the COMO Shambhala empire, luxurious touches abound: air-conditioning, Italian linens, satellite TV, even flip-flops.

Dining choices range from “eating like a castaway” – a decidedly un-Tom Hanks-like mix of luxury seafood and South Asian cuisine at Ufaa – to “COMO Shambhala cuisine”, which emphasizes raw and organic food. Of course, there is a plethora of watersport options, plus the requisite yoga and spa.

Location & How to get there

Cocoa Island is located in the Maldive Islands, each a perfect smudge of white. Here, in the quiet waters of the Indian Ocean the strongest winds are gentle breezes, and the highest points, leaning palm fronts.

Each lagoon is a point of stillness, but the encircling reefs bristle with life. Our private island resort is found in the less developed South Male Atoll, a 40-minute speedboat ride from the international airport.

On the west side lies the Kandooma Channel, considered to be one of the best dive sites in the Maldives; on the other side is a quiet reef for snorkelling flanked by a curl of rockless beach which tapers into a spit of sand. This is as long as the island, disappearing with the advance of the Maldivian tide.
