Singapore
Set in the newly hip Singapore neighborhood of Chinatown, Hotel 1929 offers what few other properties anywhere can provide: chicly sleek design and buzzy feel, while at the same time remaining light on the wallet. A sparkling faux-colonial façade shields art deco-inspired interiors dotted with splashes of bright color and high-tech conveniences.
The lobby reflects the hotel’s design philosophy from the outset, furnished generously with modernist pieces by the likes of Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen, courtesy of hotelier Loh Lik Peng’s vintage collection. Rooms are furnished with pieces from the owners’ private collection (including some Eames chairs), and reflect a sleek, modern sensibility. Some rooms can seem a little cramped, but suites boast Kiehl’s toiletries and terrace suites feature private rooftop verandas and cast-iron bathtubs.
Well-known Asian fusion restaurant Ember takes care of Hotel 1929’s culinary needs, and other facilities include a Jacuzzi, situated on a patio deck surrounded by a wooden fence for privacy.
Located in the colourful area of Keong Siak Street and on the fringe of Chinatown, 1929 Hotel Singapore consist of pre-war shop houses which is alternative to the ubiquitous glass and concrete modern hotels.
