About the Hotel

Horse-drawn buggies once thronged the area in front of this former New Oriental Hotel, disgorging the great and good of their time. Today, the charming white façade of the New Oriental remains, but the hotel within is definitively modern, focused on luxury and comfort amid all the antiques.

Set in Galle, renowned for its UNESCO-recognized Dutch fort, Amangalla strives to retain a feel of its colonial past. Rooms do a riff on the colonial theme, with four-poster beds, French windows, and large armoires. All views look out into the garden and pool or the famous fort.

Restaurants also recall the past. The Zaal (“The Great Hall” in Dutch) employs overhead fans and chandeliers to great effect, and serves daily afternoon tea. The antique-y Dining Room does not serve Dutch food, but does offer Sri Lankan curries. Even the spa is retro: named “The Baths”, guests can try out a massage or hydrotherapy pools.

 

Location & How to get there

Amangalla, 120km south of Colombo, resides within the walls of the old Dutch fort in the town of Galle, which bares only two entrances, the British ‘New Gate’ and the Dutch ‘Sea Gate’.  All flights arrive into Colombo’s Bandaranaika International airport in the daytime.

The Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is the sole international airport in Sri Lanka and is located about 30km north of the city. Travel time between the airport and the city centre varies between 45 and 60 minutes.
