Aman resorts are often beautiful, but like many women, they have to work at it, spending months prepping, primping and maintenance. Amanwella marks a bit of a departure: set on a rugged strip of coconut grove showcasing both beach and rock, it is what one would call “naturally pretty”.
Suites bear that trademark Aman stamp – streamlined décor, nothing too fussy. Beds are agreeably oversized, bathtubs are amiably big, and room hues are sensitively earthy. Amanwella has also outfitted its rooms in local timber, clay and stone to fan feelings of “oneness with nature”.
But the ecological sensitivity of the rooms may be the furthest thing from your mind as you frolic in your personal plunge pool, or watch a herd of elephants in a nearby national park. For a different type of diversion, there is the all-occasion Restaurant overlooking the pool, the alfresco Pool Terrace, or a seafood barbecue at the Beach Club.
Colombo’s Bandaranaike Intenational Airport (BIA) is the sole international airport in Sri Lanka and is located about 30km north of the city. Travel time between the airport and the city centre varies between hour and one hour.
By road from Colombo during the day, the drive to Amanwella takes approximately 6 hours on the southern coastal route. The road winds its way down the picturesque coast and is for the most part a single-carriageway.
Deccan Aviation's helicopter flight from BIA to Galle takes one hour and costs US$2,300 nett, while the flight from BIA to Tangalle is 1_ hours at a cost of US$2,875 nett. The helicopter takes a maximum of four passengers with a baggage allowance of 15 kg per person.
