The only Anantara property to take advantage of northern Thailand’s verdant, mountainous beauty rides a hillside crest overlooking Laos and Myanmar in the heart of the “Golden Triangle”, spread across 160 acres of jungle overlooking the Mekong River.
What does Anantara’s signature “Asia lite” style look like? There is plenty of silk, local art and teakwood for that dash of the authentic; huge windows overlooking three countries to impart that airy, exotic feeling; and oversized beds and bathtubs for the touch of luxury guests demand.
Diversions are many, including an Elephant Camp on the resort grounds. Sala Mae Nam serves both buffet breakfasts and Northern Thai dinners, while Baan Dhalia provides an incongruous selection of Italian dishes. Guests looking to really party hard at the Elephant Bar and Opium Terrace will have to make do with alcohol, but they can also work away last night’s sins at the spa.
For hundreds of years, the only way to travel to the mysterious Golden Triangle region was via longtail riverboat down the Mekong – or by elephant! Thankfully, with a growing number of domestic air connections to nearby Chiang Rai, the laid-back luxury of the Anantara Golden Triangle is only a short flight away.
Environment
All Anantara Resorts have effective recycling, energy-conservation and waste management measures already in place. It is very challenging for tourism to be completely sustainable as every industry has impacts, but it can work towards being more sustainable in many ways. In 2008, particular areas of focus will be to reduce waste and pollution as well as identifying effective ways of reusing grey water and dealing with solid waste. Further investigations into the use of solar power, biodegradable products and energy-efficient light systems will also be undertaken. On-going training programmes will be refined to make Anantara staff more aware of the difference ''green'' actions can make and to encourage them play their part.
