It looks like the movie set of a Thai pirate movie, but matey, it’s actually a posh seaside resort. Don’t expect to be walking the plank at Anantara Samui, one of a smattering of resorts that present visitors with a vision of Asia, pasteurized. Set in a self-described “Fisherman’s Cove” at Bo Phut beach, Anantara serves up traditional southern Thai architecture with modern conveniences in a fusion the website describes as “island magic”.
Rooms dutifully incorporate touches of southern Thai décor, plus spacious terrazzo tubs for two, teakwood floors and balconies or patios looking out over the manicured gardens. The top-of-the-line Royal Anantara Garden Suite with plunge pool obviously includes a personal pool, gigantic terrace and king-sized bed.
Because this is Samui, Anantara offers more than its share of water sports for budding sailors – ahoy! – or avid windsurfers and deep-sea fishermen. There is also a roaming yoga guru and Anantara Spa to keep you from getting too crochety. Arrgh.
Set on a quiet stretch of Bo Phut Bay, a short drive from Koh Samui's airport and the bustling nightlife scene of Chaweng, Anantara Koh Samui Resort & Spa is a true oasis of tranquillity in Thailand's famed tropical island paradise.
Environment
All Anantara Resorts have effective recycling, energy-conservation and waste management measures already in place. It is very challenging for tourism to be completely sustainable as every industry has impacts, but it can work towards being more sustainable in many ways. In 2008, particular areas of focus will be to reduce waste and pollution as well as identifying effective ways of reusing grey water and dealing with solid waste. Further investigations into the use of solar power, biodegradable products and energy-efficient light systems will also be undertaken. On-going training programmes will be refined to make Anantara staff more aware of the difference ''green'' actions can make and to encourage them play their part.
